Salzburg and its lakes

The landscape surrounding the city of Salzburg is characterized by its many lakes. To the north of the provincial capital, the lovely Salzburg Lake District with the Obertrumer See, Grabensee, Wallersee and Mattsee lakes invites you to stay a while. If you venture eastwards instead of northwards, you will reach the Salzkammergut. This spectacular region can look back on a rich historical heritage and gets its name from the ‘white gold’ – the salt that was mined here for centuries. For touristic purposes, the region is promoted as a whole today, together with the lakes Wolfgangsee and Fuchselsee on Salzburg territory, and Mondsee and Irrsee in the neighbouring province of Upper Austria. Similar to the Lake District to the north, this area offers plenty of activities on and off the water.
